So, with that in mind, here is a list of four ways to ensure a strong finish to your high school career: Grades Raise your hand if youre busy calculating the absolute minimum that you have to achieve this year in order to keep a competitive GPA. Hopefully no ones hand went up, but if yours did, consider this: What if you dont get into the school of your dreams and decide to transfer? What if you decide to apply for a scholarship, fellowship, etc. sophomore year of college and they request your high school transcript? It certainly wont look great if you dont have either a steadily improving or consistent GPA. For one, a significant drop in your GPA shows a lack of motivation and maturity. Why should anyone assume youre willing to work hard now if you werent willing to work hard then? Second, you might actually be missing out on material that will be useful to you in college. And finally, you will risk jeopardizing your relationships with your high school teachers, counselors, and administrators, who might otherwise be able to support you in your ambitions. Which brings us to Relationships Whether or not you have plans to return to your hometown, its important to continue to build relationships at your high school through senior year (and we dont just mean with your friends). As you grow older, you will learn that the connections you make truly matter. So if nothing else, continuing to work hard and make a good impression will simply be good practice for the future. At the same time, you never know when you might need to call upon a former teacher, your principal, or another adult at your school for a letter of recommendation or a reference. However, at the same time, were certainly not suggesting that you build relationships with the sole goal of getting something out of them. Were simply encouraging you to continue to work hard, do well in your classes, and remain involved in extracurricular activities in such a way that people are impressed with your effort. If you do so, these connections will form naturally and you will have a solid network to build upon in the future. Extracurricular activities While you certainly need to set aside some extra time to spend with your friends and family, work on your college applications, and perhaps even visit some college campuses, senior year is not the time to let your extracurricular activities and community involvement slide. These activities will help you continue to build a strong foundation for success with skills surrounding time management, teamwork, and leadership, in addition to helping you discover where your strengths and passions lie. Moreover, staying involved, whether it be in a sport, art, or volunteer effort, will help you continue to strengthen the relationships referenced above. Chances are you already have a solid draft of your Common Application essay (we hope!), but some (if not all) of those school supplements may remain unchecked on your to-do list. We have three words for you: Dont. Burn. Out. With many of you applying to six or mores schools, you might find it difficult to remain motivated until the very end. This means you won’t need to organise recitals, practise sessions, the band’s calendar, or scheduling concerts, they should already have all of this sorted.The problem when you first start is that it can be difficult to find a band that already exists and is looking for members. Guitarists are hardly rare and most bands will be able to choose from several different ones. You will, therefore, need to give it your all in the audition and make sure you're prepared before you go.Before an audition, you should probably pra ctise a couple of the songs that the band regularly plays. You’ll be less stressed and you’ll be able to show off all your skills as a guitarist.You should also know that your level mightn’t necessarily be a drawback. You may find a group of beginners or intermediates who can help you progress at a lightning pace, as long as you also practise outside of the scheduled practise sessions.Additionally, make sure you get a good feeling from the group of musicians you’re joining! Every instrument needs to keep time with the drummer.  While you can practise keeping time on your own, you still have to follow the drummer when they’re playing. Not everyone has a natural rhythm, after all.Someone who grew up with musicians or dancers will be more familiar with rhythm and will probably learn to play guitar more quickly than someone who didn’t. Someone with no musical experience will probably have to work on their rhythm, music theory, and scales.Unfortunately, working on your rhythm isn’t as simple as playing a chord. LSAT Keys to Success Pacing Yourself LSAT Law School Blog The LSAT Is All About Pacing In an earlier blog, I wrote about the crucial importance of timing yourself when preparing for the LSAT. A companion strategy to timing is pacing. Once you get a sense of how quickly you have to work, develop a pacing plan that works for you. The goal is to practice enough and take enough timed test sections that you are extremely comfortable when you open that book to each section. You know exactly how quickly you’ll have to work within each section. You know some will be harder and some will be easier, but you know how to pace yourself. You will eventually develop a pacing strategy for each section: Logic Games/Analytical Reasoning - Typically, one section will have four logic games. It’s a good idea to quickly flip through the section, and put an X over the game style that’s most difficult for you and save it for last. There may be a time in the Games section where you cannot make any headway in one of the first three you’ve chosen. You’ll get that sinking feeling you chose the wrong game to save for last and panic wondering if you should stick with this one or abandon it. Use your timed practice to experiment how long it takes to move to a 4th game and set it up. Reading Comprehension â€" This section is tricky, because passages that read easily and are about a topic you like can turn out to have the most difficult questions. It’s a good idea to use your timed practice tests to get a sense of how much time you have to start through a passage and figure out if you want to stay with it or skip it. Logical Reasoning â€" You must remember that on the logical reasoning section, every question is worth one point. Some you can read and solve quickly, some you can resolve with a little thinking. When you get stuck, train yourself while practicing to just move on. Make a guess and come back to it later if there’s time. It might be a good idea to think about pacing when you need a break from the content. On one of those days when the reading comprehension passages no longer make any sense and you can’t look at another logic game, take a break and formalize your pacing strategies.
